Made of Shigaraki pottery clay in Shiga Prefecture, this donabe rice cooker rich in compost material heats the rice slowly from its core, making the rice fluffy. Hi-iro is a traditional Japanese scarlet color, a very rare color used in pots. Modern glazing techniques are used to reproduce the unique color of the pots made in ancient times using clay from the bottom of Lake Biwa and firing them in flame started with Pine tree barks. Ame-iro is an exquisite candy-like color somewhere between dark brown and black, finished with a glossy and elegant glaze. Cooks 3-4 go (cups) of rice.

  • Handwash with a soft sponge and wipe clean
  • Air dry the pot upside down before storing to prevent the clay from absorbing moisture
  • Do not wash with abrasive cleaning products
Before first time use, we recommend seasoning your donabe. The process is called "Medome," and it extends the life of the pot by sealing all the tiny pores, preventing possible cracks and leaks.
  • Wash the donabe and dry well with the bottom side facing up
  • Fill the pot with 8 parts water and a bowl of left over rice
  • Stir to loosen the rice and cook slowly over low heat until it thickens
  • After making a very pasty porridge, turn off the heat and allow the pot to cool down (for more than an hour)
  • Remove the porridge and rinse well (the porridge is edible)
